Join us for a night of inspiring, educational, and hard-to-find films sourced by The Gallery at Casa. It Came From Canada: Two important Canadian artists are highlighted through two art documentaries. A prelude to National Canadian Film Day on the third Wednesday of April.
Charcoal and Clay: Jean Pierre Larocque (Directed by Bruno Boulianne, 52 mins, 2019)
After spending 15 years in artistic and academic explorations at different American schools and universities, painter and ceramicist Jean-Pierre Larocque returned to Montreal at the turn of the 2000s. In this portrait film, Larocque opens his studio to viewers. Using charcoal “reluctantly” and grinding away slate like so many layers of skin, he is a creator of unfathomable sensitivity who shapes intriguing, enchanting works that play on time and eras while reminding us of our own human ghosts. In this portrait film, artist Jean-Pierre Larocque opens the doors of his workshops to us. Working “backwards” with charcoal and pressing clay like so many layers of skin, we discover an artist of unfathomable sensitivity, producing intriguing, enchanting works that toy with time and eras while reminding us of our own phantoms of humanity.

Cliff: A Portrait of An Artist (Directed by Adam Brooks, 48m, 2021)
A documentary-portrait of one of Winnipeg’s most successful visual artists, Cliff Eyland who, with only months to live, received a double-lung transplant and a new lease on life. Cliff calls the year since his surgery an afterlife, even though he is precious about nothing. In fact, his Zen-fullness often borders on the lackadaisical. He spends every day in his studio, making art, and doling out his recently amassed wealth to less fortunate artists, because “Hey, you can’t take it with you.” A man who has been on every side of the art scene (writer, professor, curator, artist, model), Cliff sees the absurdity of it all very clearly. CLIFF: A PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST is an effort to understand how a man could slide, smiling into the Abyss, through 100 biopsies, 10,000 pills, and somehow reconcile his Artist’s ego with his complete coolness about mortality.
