The Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club invites you to celebrate Ukrainian New Year’s at Malanka -a night of Ukrainian food, fun, and festivities on January 21, 2017! Guests will be treated to a special dance performance featuring the dances and brightly coloured costumes from various regions of Ukraine. A complete Ukrainian family style dinner (perogies, cabbage rolls, sausage, etc) will follow. The evening will be topped off with a dance with live music provided by the Ukrainian band Absolute. New this year is a change of location, now being held at the Multicultural Centre, making this a more intimate experience. In addition to the silent auction and raffles, there will be a photo booth complete with authentic Ukrainian costumes and props. And of course there will be the ever popular Kolomeyka.
The “Kolomeyka” is a proud Canadian Ukrainian tradition. It begins with the dance floor clearing and observers trying to find the perfect spot to view the “tricks”. Members of the crowd join hands forming a circle or “Kolo”. The real fun begins when individual and group dancers take the center of the circle to show off their most impressive dance moves in order to win crowd approval. Leaps, kicks, spins, lifts and acrobatics ensue. For the more athletic and bold, human pyramids are attempted. It is a spectacle to behold and not one you’ll soon forget.
