In Situ – April Matisz
My studio practice is rooted in biology and culture. I’m interested exploring personal and collective myths, histories, and identities, particularly from a biological perspective. How we think and feel, what we imagine and desire: these impulses are, in part, directed and informed by our biology and our environment. I investigate this through depictions of landscapes and bodies. The influence of the environment on the self, and the intersections of biology and culture, are themes found throughout my work.
My practice is interdisciplinary, drawing on phenomenology and the sciences, particularly ecology and evolution. My working method involves research, collecting reference materials, gathering and altering objects, and material exploration. I primarily draw and paint, but also employ print-making, photography, clay and installation.
