Lethbridge Jazz & Blues Festival: Sweet Inspiration: Gospel Jazz & Marcus Mosely
June 13, 2018 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm MDT$10
June 13, 2018 at 7:30 pm at Southminster United Church
Marcus Mosey was born in the Texas panhandle in a small town called Ralls. Segregation and Jim Crow laws were still the order of the day. It was there that he began to hear the music, at first from his mother, who always had a song on her lips… whether she was picking cotton, cleaning white folks homes or weeding her own little victory garden. Marcus soon discovered that he too carried around a well of music in his soul and since then has found himself “drawing from the well” in many places around the world.
He has sung throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific. Just before Expo 86 Marcus made Vancouver his home. Since then he has starred in various highly successful stage productions… “Ain’t Misbehavin”, “Black and Gold Revue” and “Show Boat”. He was even nominated for a Jesse Richardson award (Best Performance in a Musical) for his role in “It’s Time To Sing” (created and directed by Marcus)… a musical chronology of Gospel ranging from slavery to modern times. He has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies including “Twist of Faith” and “Holiday Heart” and was the singing voice of Fluttershy in an episode of My Little Pony.
In 2016, Marcus was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame. In 2007, Marcus joined forces with Will Sanders and Ron Small (and now Khari McLelland) to create the well-known Roots Gospel trio, The Sojourners. Marcus initially brought the trio together to provide background vocals on Canadian Blues legend Jim Byrnes’ award-winning CD, “House of Refuge”. The trio went on to record its first CD, “Hold On”, which received no less than four awards nominations… including a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Vocal Group of the Year. In 2010 the Sojourners released their second CD project simply called, “The Sojourners”, which was nominated for a Juno award in the Best Blues Album category. The CD did, however, receive the WCMA (Western Canadian Music Award) award for Best Gospel Recording. In 2013 the Sojourners released their 3rd CD, “Sing and Never Get Tired” which won the WCMA award for “Best Spiritual Recording of the Year” in 2014. They have opened for The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Mavis Staples, Dr. John, David Sanborn and Bobby McFerrin.
In September 2011, Marcus launched: The Marcus Mosely Chorale (MMC). The Chorale is a 70 plus voice community Gospel Choir led by Marcus Mosely (artistic director), Darlene Ketchum (choral director) and Bill Sample (musical director). MMC has performed with soloists Dee Daniels, Eleanor Collins (Order of Canada recipient, 2013) Leon Bibb, Jane Mortifee, Jim Byrnes, Dawn Pemberton and the Sojourners and at many events including, the Con Brio Music Festival in Whistler, Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, Vancouver Jazz Festival (2012, 2015), and the North Vancouver 55+ BC Games. MMC is now beginning its 7th year and was recently featured on Marcus’ latest CD, “Labour of Love”.
